The first fortress in this area was built by the Spanish in 1525 to protect the
gateway to the Caribbean Sea. The fortresses of El Morro and Castillo San Cristobal defended
Puerto Rico throughout the Drake's attack in 1595, the Dutch attack in 1625, the Spanish-American
war of 1989 through World War II. Both fortresses are administered by the
U.S. National Park Service.
